At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in 1999 Casio introduced the first GPS watch. Currently GPS watches are available from quite a few manufacturers at very reasonable prices. You can even buy your kid –or yourself- a new GPS watches for a price under $100.
You may ask yourself why someone need or want to wear a GPS watch? Here are several reasons why people need to purchase a GPS watch.
For training purpose. Most people who bought a GPS watch buy it for training. It will tell you precisely how far and fast you have travelled. Several GPS watches also include an altimeter which will track your vertical performance as well. You can mark your start location at the beginning of your training session, and the GPS will give a note on your starting point and time. Suring your training session you can access the data anytime. The GPS will note where you are and how much time has lapsed, and the little tiny computer in the watch will give you a calculation how far you have gone and how fast your are travelling.
Many GPS watches have other performance features built into them, too, such as heart rate monitors. It is really amazing how much technologies you can carry into that wristwatch right?
Route planning. With a GPS watch on your hand, you can plan the route you want to hike, walk, climb or whatever activities by downloading routes from your computer into that watch. You can also use this function in reverse, i.e. record the route so that you can come back to it easily.
This function has some fun uses. For example, say you find a great fishing hole while out hiking you can mark the exact location of the fish hole, and record the route that took you there.
Safety. Your GPS watch will tell you exactly where in the world you are. If you have an accident and get hurt, become ill or get lost, at least you know your location. If you can communicate with others, you can give rescue crews the right information they need to get to you.
(Of course, if you used that route tracking capability, you won’t be lost because you can find your way back using your GPS watch.)
It tells time, too and not just digital time. And the time is absolutely accurate, continuously updated time based to the atomic clocks in the GPS satellites. Your GPS watch will never be off by even one second, not even by a nanosecond.
